Why Do We Need Battery Storage?

  • Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are revolutionizing grid stability. They act as "energy reservoirs," storing excess power during times of low demand and releasing it when demand surges. This smooths out fluctuations, preventing blackouts and enhancing overall grid reliability. BESS also provides frequency regulation and grid balancing services, helping to ensure a resilient power grid.

  • By enabling greater use of renewable energy, BESS play a vital role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change.

  • Renewable energy sources like solar and wind are not always available when needed. BESS step in to bridge the gap. By storing excess renewable energy, BESS ensure a steady supply even when the sun isn't shining or the wind isn't blowing, making the integration of clean energy sources whole.

  • BESS are a crucial tool in transitioning to a sustainable energy future. As we strive for cleaner, more reliable energy, BESS stand at the forefront of this exciting journey.

  • On April 1, 2025, the project will be submitting a petition for an individual and comprehensive zoning exemption pursuant to MGL c. 40 A § 3.  A copy of the petition will be available on this site when submitted.

  • Interconnecting to the grid is another vital requirement for the successful implementation of the battery storage project. Collaborating closely with the Independent System Operator of New England and National Grid, the local utility provider, the project team is focused on finalizing the necessary studies and agreements for grid interconnection.

  • Engaging with the local community and relevant stakeholders is an important aspect of the project as facilitated by the local authority. Keeping the community informed and gathering their feedback is essential to address any concerns and ensure project transparency.

The project developers are hosting an open house on March 27, 2025 from 4-7pm at the Woods Memorial Library in Barre, MA. The open house will be held in Allen Hall. This is an opportunity for members of the community to learn more about the project.

  • Identifying suitable contractors and procuring the necessary equipment and materials is an important step. This process involves careful evaluation and selection to ensure the highest quality and cost-effectiveness.

  • Detailed engineering and design work is carried out in adherence to industry standards and state and local requirements.

  • The project development timeline is dependent on the grid interconnection and permitting processes, both of which are currently underway for the project.
